The
Lodge has an associated Royal Arch Chapter,
Howardian
Chapter No. 5317
The
Lodge name was derived from the Howard Gardens Municipal Secondary School in
Cardiff and was formed by 'old boys' of the school. These were, it is
understood, prominent men in Cardiff Docks, which resulted in the Cardiff
Exchange Lodge No. 3775 becoming the Sponsor Lodge.
The
original name was to have been Howard Gardens Lodge, but after W. Bro. Edgar
J Rutter had discussed the matter with United Grand Lodge the name was
changed to the present one.
The
first Master of the Lodge was W. Bro. Edgar J Rutter.
This
Lodge is one of three Hall Stone Lodges in the Province, the other two being
Margam Abbey Lodge No 5257 and Glantawe
Lodge No 5378.
When
the Howard Gardens School was rebuilt as a new school, it was decided to
call it 'Howardians School'. Thus in a way, the Lodge gave back what it had
been called in the first place.
Is
this the only instance of a school being named after a Masonic Lodge?
