The Lodge was
formed by Brethren who were formed pupils of Cardiff High School for Boys, and
was named after the then school playing field located on the North side of
Newport Road, Cardiff, and called 'The Harlequins Ground'.
The school badge,
which consists of the old Cardiff Coat of Arms, and the Motto was incorporated
into the Lodge Crest, which also depicts the Prince of Wales feathers, the
daffodil, and a Welsh Dragon rampant bearing the old City Standard.
The Lodge was
consecrated on 15th May 1939 by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master,
W.Bro. Edgar J. Rutter, the Provincial Grand Master being unable to attend owing
to illness. W.Bro. Rutter, who was made an Honorary Member, became a Joining
Member and served as Lodge Secretary from 1946 to 1953 when he became Master of
the Lodge. His two sons served as Masters during 1948/49 and 1949/50.
The first Master
of the Lodge was W.Bro. R P Clare.
In 1989 the Lodge
celebrated its 50th Anniversary, during which, on Monday 13th March
1989 the Deputy Provincial Grand Master dedicated a newly designed Banner,
described as follows.
The Banner
comprises a Classical Harlequin standing on a black and white squared paving
with the Lodge name and number in a scroll across the top of the Banner. The
background of the Banner is blue. A large gold-coloured Square and Compasses is
located in the centre of the Banner and forms a frame for the Motto.
