The Allied Forces were well established in Europe and were
pushing back the German army on all fronts when this Lodge was granted its
Warrant.
The Lodge was consecrated on 11th January 1945.
The name OBSERVER, is quite unique in Freemasonry, it being
the only one of its kind in the world. Special dispensation had to be obtained
from Grand Lodge to use this particular name.
In ancient times torch bearers lit fires at strategically
placed sites across the country to warn of impending danger. They 'observed',
and took the necessary action accordingly. Thus the 'Observer Corps' was born!
The Lodge was Founded by Brethren who belonged to No 25
Observer Corps, which later became the Royal Observer Corps. The Lodge was, in
fact the brainchild of W Bro Harry Stockwell, the Provincial Grand Secretary at
that time, and who became its first Master.
When the Observer Corps was first founded its duties were to
spot, plot and report the position of enemy aircraft. They played a most
important and vital role in the defence of this country, particularly in the
early days of the 1939-1945 war when German bombers seemed to be unstoppable,
and when London was bombed for fifty six consecutive nights!
