The
Lodge has an associated Royal Arch Chapter,
Cape St. Vincent Chapter No. 8524
The Lodge took its name from the great Naval battle which
took place on 14 February 1797, when a British fleet under the command of
Admiral Jarvis (later Earl St Vincent), fought a Spanish fleet, under the
command of Admiral Jose de Cordova, off Cape St Vincent.
Captain Horatio Nelson commanded the 'Captain' on which
were one hundred men of the Welsh Regiment (the spelling changed from Welsh
to Welch in 1920), under Lt. Pearson, and who were serving as Marines.
During the battle Captain Nelson closed with the 80 gun 'San Nicholas',
boarding her, and having captured the ship sailed her into the 112 'San
Joseph' which he also boarded and which, within minutes, surrendered.
Captain Nelson had the honour of accepting the surrender of the Spaniards on
the deck of the 'San Joseph', with Lt. Pearson standing at his side.
The Welsh Regiment were later awarded the Battle Honour
'St Vincent', which no other British Regiment possesses, and were also
granted the unique distinction of wearing a Naval Crown and the
superscription '12 April 1782' on the Colours. This superscription was
granted to commemorate the 'Battle of the Saints', the regiment having taken
part in the battles of Bellisle and Martinique.
The Lodge Crest depicts the Welsh Dragon holding a sword
representing the military force of the Principality, the Red Dragon standing
on the waves, surmounted by a Naval Crown signifying the traditional role of
the Welsh Regiment as Marines. On a scroll beneath the Crest is the motto of
the regiment - 'Gwell Angau Na Chywilyddl (Better Death than Disgrace). The
name and number of the Lodge encircles the Dragon.
The Lodge was consecrated on 17 September 1973, by the
Provincial Grand Master.
The first Master of the Lodge was W Bro Colonel Gordon
L.P. Elias, TD, DL, and Past Master of Beehive LODGE No. 6265.
Historical Note: On 11 June 1969, the 41st
Foot Welch Regiment and the 24th Foot South Wales Borderers amalgamated to
become the 24/41 Royal Regiment of Wales.
