The Oriel Lodge was formed
primarily to enhance the ties between those at present or formerly
associated with Surveying, Engineering, Architecture, Estate Agency and other
professions associated with the Land.
The Lodge was sponsored by
Juventus Lodge No 8105, with the petition signed by their Master and
Wardens in Open Lodge on 17 June 1981. The Lodge was consecrated by the
then
Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. The Rt. Hon. The Lord Swansea, D.L., on Friday 12
March 1982. There were 17 Founding Members - 10 still remain subscribing
members. The Founding Master was W. Bro. Oswald Lucas, P.J G.D.
The name of the Lodge derives
from 'Oriel' - a window which projects from the upper stories of a
building to let in light. The Lodge Badge has been carefully designed,
and is explained as follows:
"The overall shape is an
elongated 'O' for 'Oriel', being a pleasant perimeter 'non-heraldic'
shape. Contained within this overall shape is a symbolic 'Oriel
Window' - a polygonal formation corbelled with squares. As it will
symbolise a new Welsh Lodge, the Badge reflects the Welsh element
(however subtly) through its symbolic representation of the 'Owain
Glyndwr' helmet.
The Badge, seen
simplistically, is designed to represent 'a single ear of corn'.
This symbolises a new Lodge which, from small beginnings and with an
element of faith and enjoyable effort, will be fruitful and multiply
in the quantity of its members and in the quality of its
friendships.
The Compasses and Squares form
part of the design, and are symbolic of the roof and window brackets
respectively."
Membership of the Lodge
currently stands at 30.
